COLLABORATION BETWEEN WETHERBY MARKETS AND WETHERBY
RACECOURSE & CONFERENCE CENTRE WITH THE NATIONAL
HORSERACING COLLEGE

THURSDAY 13TH APRIL 2023

Free, racing themed children’s activities being provided at Wetherby’s weekly
Thursday market.

Wetherby Markets and Wetherby Racecourse & Conference Centre are pleased to announce a collaboration
which will provide a day of free, fun and engaging activities for local children during the Easter school
holidays.

Wetherby Racecourse & Conference Centre, in conjunction with the National Horseracing College, will be
attending Wetherby’s weekly market on Thursday 13th April 2023, with activities running from 10am to 2pm.
Children will be able to try on silks and riding hats and have a turn on a wobble board which jockeys use to
build their balance and core strength. The day will also be used to launch a colouring competition, with the
winning design going on to the race card cover for the Family Raceday taking place at Wetherby Racecourse
on 30th April.

Councillor Dean Buckle, Chair of Welcome to Wetherby and member of Wetherby Town Council’s Markets
Committee says:
“We’re delighted to be providing an opportunity for Wetherby Racecourse & Conference Centre to join us on
the weekly Thursday market and are grateful to them for providing these free activities.
Wetherby has a long history of holding both markets and horse-racing events and to be able to collaborate
and put these together in a way that will hopefully engage the next generation of shoppers and racegoers is
a great opportunity.”

Michelle Campbell, General Manager of Wetherby Racecourse & Conference Centre said:
“We are delighted to have been invited to attend the Wetherby weekly market and feel that it will be a great
way of connecting with people within our community. We already work with children in Wetherby through the
Racing to Schools initiative, and we also partner with Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) , enabling
them to bring a large group of volunteers and WiSE friends along to enjoy an afternoon of racing. Horseracing
has been a huge part of Wetherby’s history and we are really looking forward to chatting to people and
hearing some stories about the Racecourse ‘back in the day’!

Our colleagues at the National Horseracing College, will be bringing some Jockey clothing and training
equipment along and will also have some racing related activities for the children to have a go at. We all feel
it is important that people living within the area, understand more about the Racecourse, and what we do,
and we are excited to attend.”
