Wetherby Racecourse is a premier destination for horse racing enthusiasts, where the thrilling thunder of hooves, the elegance of the powerful thoroughbred, and the excitement of competition come together in a grand spectacle.
The Racecourse
Our racecourse features a meticulously maintained left-handed racing track which is a little under 1 mile 4 furlongs around, mostly flat but with a slight incline in the home straight and to the winning post and a downhill run to the back-straight.
There are nine Steeplechase fences, four in the home straight and five down the back straight. The Hurdles’ course has six flights of hurdles, three in each straight. Flat races are run on the hurdles’ course, with a home straight of about half a mile.
Wetherby commence their Jump Season in mid-October, with the Opening Meeting followed very swiftly just two-weeks later by the two-day Charlie Hall Meeting, currently sponsored by bet365, which features the £100,000 Charlie Hall Steeplechase. Another highlight in the Wetherby fixture list is the two-day Yorkshire Christmas Meeting, sponsored by William Hill, which takes place on Boxing Day and 27th December. Jump racing continues into the New Year and Spring, coming to a close before Wetherby’s first Flat Meeting of the season which takes place on the Sunday Family Day fixture at the end of April. Wetherby will then race over the flat into June when the season ends.
We have been racing on our current site since 1891!
Horse racing in Wetherby first took place in an ‘organised’ fashion on land that is now the site of Wetherby Golf Club. In Easter 1891, racing was moved to land leased from Captain Montagu at Ingmanthorpe Hall, the site of the Racecourse today.
The Wetherby Steeplechase Committee Ltd was formed in 1920 and the company purchased the freehold of the Racecourse in 1953.
Flat racing began at Wetherby in 2015, which up to that point had been winter jump racing only.

The British Horseracing Authority or BHA are the official governing body of British Horseracing.
The Racecourse Association or RCA are the trade association for the 59 Racecourses in Britain.
Great British Racing is the sport’s official marketing body, working with all of racing’s stakeholders.
Under contract to the 59 British racecourses, RBC is responsible for the administration of racecourse bookmakers and the conduct of on-course betting.

Tess is the newest member of the Wetherby Racecourse crew 🐶 At just 9 weeks old she is groundstaff Matt`s new pride and joy. She will be spending her days out on the track helping the lads to keep the Racecourse in top condition! We will make sure she comes into the office for regular treats and cuddles too!

Join us for an exciting seven-race programme and the ever-popular Mascot Gold Cup—all in support of @suerydercharity.
Away from the track, the National Festival Circus will entertain visitors of all ages with three free to access shows throughout the day. The kids can also get involved in racing and horse-themed crafting and expel some energy on the inflatables. @nbhorsecharity will also be here with an ambassador horse that you can meet on the day.
