March is Brain Tumour Awareness Month, and Wetherby Racecourse has proudly supported this cause for many years, culminating in the Wear a Hat Raceday at the end of the month.

In 2022, we launched the March Course Walk, providing an opportunity for people to get outdoors, connect with others, and explore the racecourse behind the scenes with our Clerk of the Course, Jonjo Sanderson, and Head Groundsman, Neal Kidd. We created this event in response to the isolation caused by the pandemic, aiming to bring people together and share a unique experience.

This year, we’ve teamed up with Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity, who host Flat Cap Fridays throughout March. As a result, we’ve renamed the event the Flat Cap Course Walk. This walk not only gives people a chance to experience the racecourse but also to discuss their personal or indirect connections to brain tumours.

The walk has become a hit, with attendees thoroughly enjoying the experience and learning more about racing and our operations. During last year’s walk, participants visited the hurdle shed to discover how we build the birch hurdles, which we are gradually replacing with new padded versions. This year, more than 30 people took part and also enjoyed a quick stop at the stables to learn about pre- and post-raceday activities.

After the walk, we invited everyone into the Weighing Room to warm up with a cup of tea and a biscuit while exploring the facilities.

While there was no fee to attend, we encouraged donations for Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity. Thanks to the generosity of our guests, we raised £337.40, along with an additional £100 cheque donation. Additionally, ladies from Brighouse Town and Inner District Wheel presented a £200 donation, bringing the total raised to £637.40. All funds will go directly to supporting the important work of YBTC.

Friday 28th March is Wear A Hat Raceday, raising awareness nationally.  We encourage everyone attending to wear a hat to show support and we will be handing out spot prizes to those that particularly take our fancy!  YBTC volunteers will be at the Racecourse to chat about the work the charity does and will be raising funds via donations, a charity raffle and exit collection.
