We have 57 confirmed runners in Sunday’s Mascot Gold Cup.  The going is currently soft to cuddly.

The Sue Ryder Mascot Gold Cup runs annually at Wetherby Races, and is open to all to enter a Mascot; charities, companies, clubs or individuals either with their own Mascots or borrowing one of a collection of over 100 Sue Ryder Mascots if they wish.

Competitors raise money for Sue Ryder and/or for their own chosen club or charity on the day. The race has a handicap system, based on the size and weight of the outfit and feet, and is run over a distance of 1 furlong (220 yards) and 6 small fences.

In 2015, the race attained the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for the most mascots in a race (125 Mascots), a record which still stands today.

The Mascot Gold Cup, this year sponsored by Modality Partnership, has raised over £190,000 for Sue Ryder over the last 18 years and a similar amount for other good causes.

Notable entries amongst this year’s runners include:

  • Two jockeys, one flat and one jump jockey!  Who will handle the ground better, the hedgehog or the horse!
  • Last year’s winner, Panto Pony is reappearing but now carries a higher handicap mark and has just completed an ultra marathon. Stamina could be an issue.
  • The Sausages, firm-favourites with the crowd, never really make a show, however, younger legs this year may improve their chances.
  • Football fans can cheer on one of eight Club Mascots, Harrogate Town, Holbeach United, Runcorn Linnets, York City, Marske United, Whitby Town and Northallerton Town.
  • Local MP Robbie Moore, in Cliff the Castle had a dramatic fall last year, and is determined to go better.
  • Racecourse Vets, Hird & Partners, have three entries, and you can be guaranteed they will all be in tip-top condition
