Racing’s national day of volunteering in support of local communities, the Racing Together Community Day, returns on Thursday 25 May 2023, when all those involved in the sport are invited to give their time to good causes.
The Team at Wetherby wanted to offer some help to local charity WiSE – Wetherby in Support of the Elderly, who they already have a connection with via the WiSE Racedays they organise to bring together 40-60 elderly people for a day’s racing.
On Tuesday 23rd May, Maddy & Michelle headed off into Wetherby to help set-up and run the Pay As You Feel Cafe that WiSE operates every Tuesday from Wetherby Town Hall. Armed with some delicious millionaire’s shortbread made by Maddy and some fruit Scones baked by Sarah in the Wetherby Office, they spent the morning making sandwiches, ploughman’s lunches, and serving soup, sausage rolls, tea/coffee and cakes. There was also a lot of washing-up involved!
It was heart-warming to see how many people used the cafe, and to meet some of the regulars, Some who had also attended on one of the racing days out.
Michelle Campbell, General Manager Wetherby Racecourse, said “It really does feel great to spend a few hours doing something outside of the office that benefits others and I take my hat off to the team of regular volunteers that turn up every week to help WiSE run the Cafe, and those who help out on their activity days. The Cafe was really busy and it is obviously appreciated by the local community. We will definitely help out again and are already mulling over a few ideas!”
